HISTORY
  • Madras Medical College is one of the TOP Ranking College in INDIA. Madras Medical College is the pioneer in the Introduction of Pharmaceutical Education in the country.
  • It was the first institution to provide education for pharmacy practice. In 1860 Pharmacy class (training on Materia Medica) was started for students of Medicine and Apothecary.
  • In 1870 certificate course for Chemists and Druggists was modeled on similar course run by the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain – Duration: 1 year.
  • In 1886 duration was increased to 2 years. In September 1938, the University of Madras started 3-year degree course B.Sc Pharmacy and classes started on 3-July-1939 onwards.
  • In 1946 separate department of Pharmaceutics was sanctioned. In 1950, 3 year Bachelor of Pharmacy course came into force.
  • In 1961, an integrated degree (B.Pharmacy) course of 4 years duration came into force. In 1995, M.Pharmacy course was started in four specializations.
  • In 2008, a separate College of Pharmacy, Madras Medical College was established and Principal post was created.

  • The Department is equipped with sophisticated instruments like fully automated advanced microwave system, glass reactor, flash rotary vacuum evaporator, vacuum oven, thermostatic oil bath, thermostatic water bath.
  • The main area of research is synthesis, extraction, isolation of novel heterocyclic lead molecules by (CADD, conventional microwave irradiation of natural and synthetic origins). The lead molecules are screened for various biological activities

The Department of Pharmaceutics is a cornerstone of the institute, playing a vital role in education and research related to drug development, delivery, and evaluation. The department boasts state-of-the-art facilities, enabling advanced research in areas such as:

· Novel and targeted drug delivery systems

· Pre-formulation and incompatibility studies

· Cost-effective and time-efficient formulation strategies

The department has pioneered the integration of software-aided design and simulation technologies in the development of new drug delivery systems. This approach enhances the therapeutic efficacy and safety of pharmaceutical formulations.

  • The Department of Pharmaceutics is one of the key departments of the Institute. It is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to undertake research in drug development, delivery, and evaluation.
  • The Department has expertise in research areas such as development and evaluation of newer formulations, targeted drug delivery system, pre-formulation and incompatibility studies.
  • Department of Pharmaceutics traced its footpaths in current trends of newer drug delivery systems combining the software development technologies leading to fabrication of essentials medicines paying the approach to reduce the time and cost of formulation.
  • As a result there is an increased focus on making drugs that can perform better therapeutically in terms of efficacy and safety. The department is well equipped with Machine Room, Analytical Room and Preparatory room comprising of sophisticated machines and equipments as per requirement of University, PCI and AICTE.

  • Pharmacology is often described as a bridge science because it incorporates knowledge and skills from a number of basic science disciplines including physiology, Cellular and molecular biology.
  • Pharmacology involves the study and description of the drugs and their effect on whole body system. Pharmacologist are able to translate such knowledge into the rational development of therapeutics.
  • Pharmacology upholds the major role in bringing the drug into the market by the means of clinical trials. Department of pharmacology offers training in Pharmacology and toxicology to undergraduate and post graduate students.  Department of Pharmacology is committed to achieve and to be strive for excellence in teaching and research.
  • Apart from teaching also includes the interactive modules in pharmacy, demonstration exercises in experimental pharmacology software, Group discussion on clinical oriented problems, drug display and seminars related to pharmacology. This pharmacological study involves analysing the problems associated with the drugs used for various diseases.
  • Pharmacological field encompasses drug composition, drug design, molecular diagnostics, medical applications, etc. It revolves around the mechanism of drug action, pharmacological action, and adverse effects and also therapeutic approach in management of various diseases.
  • Toxicity studies on animals and Pharmacological screening of various drugs can be performed by conducting experiments on animals and bioassays on isolated tissues. The students will acquire knowledge on Anatomy of human body, physiological functions and pathophysiological condition in human body.
  • The goal of pharmacology department is to prepare the students for successful Carrier in industry, academics research, pharmacovigilance etc.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSY

  • The field of Pharmacognosy plays an inevitable role in the Pharmacy curriculum as it provides a systematic and scientific validation of traditional medicines. Pharmacognostical standardisation helps to develop lead molecules from natural sources and to establish the Pharmacological and biochemical roles of these molecules.
  • Though the traditional medicine provides a gold mine for alleviating diseases, there is a lacuna in the availability of standard preparations. Hence there is an urgent need to standardize herbal preparations which is a major area of research.
  • Pharmacognosy has undergone significant changes in recent years and today it substantiates as an interdisciplinary science. The subject seeks to bridge the gap between modern and traditional systems of medicine.
  • Pharmacognosy lab of College of Pharmacy Madras Medical College is well equipped with spacious laboratories to train UG and PG students, with facilities for extraction, isolation and identification of phytopharmaceuticals. The instruments which are available in the Department are UV Spectroscopy, Stability Chamber, Rotary vaccum evaporator, Trinocular microscope with digital camera, Rotary microtome, Electric centrifuge, Muffle furnace, Volatile oil distillation apparatus etc.,

PREPARATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF HAND SANITIZER DURING COVID 19 PERIOD TO GOVERNMENT GENERAL HOSPITAL
  • During Covid Pandemic times, our institution has been supporting the “ RAJIV GANDHI GOVERNMENT GENERAL HOSPITAL” (Asia’s Largest Hospital) and Chennai Police Force by manufacturing Hand sanitizer and Tunnel Disinfectant to meet the huge demands.

ALL INDIA PHARMACY QUIZ
  • The Pharmacy Quiz Competition began in 2004-2005 at Madras Medical College during the National Pharmacy Week celebrations for students of Pharmacy Colleges in and around Chennai.
  • This evolved into the Tamil Nadu Pharmacy Quiz competition in the year 2009 and in the year 2010, it evolved into the Pan South India Pharmacy Quiz which included teams from various Colleges from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala. In the year 2011, the All India Pharmacy Quiz competition was conducted and it included teams from Pharmacy colleges all over India.
  • In the year 2012, totally 559 teams across 9 states participated in the quiz. In the year 2013, 414 teams participated. In 2014, 270 teams participated. In the year 2017, totally 523 teams participated and in 2018 totally 413 teams participated.
  • The 11th Edition of the All India Pharmacy Quiz for B.Pharm, M.Pharm and Pharm.D students was conducted throughout India in the year 2020 at College of Pharmacy, Madras Medical College. A total of 350 teams participated in the event which was conducted at 20 centres, comprising of 30 colleges and covering 8 states across India.
  • Cash prizes of a total value of ₹.62,000 and consolation prizes for a total value of ₹.10,000 were distributed.

  • The College of Pharmacy, Madras Medical College placement cell is continuously involved in project work allotment, industrial/hospital training and student placement. We offer a reputable forum that serves as a bridge between drug manufacturing industries and students.
  • By inviting various pharmaceutical companies, IT Healthcare professional organizations for campus recruitment of student who are in final year of B. Pharm / M. Pharm program.

  • Encourage and assist our students to join as JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) in Government sectors like Captain Srinivasa Murthy Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Chennai and IIT, Chennai.
  • To arrange internship for M. Pharm students in Drug Testing Laboratory, Directorate of Medical Sciences, Tenyampet, Chennai to hone their technical and analytical skill sets.

  • The institution offers amenities like Cricket court, Hockey court, Volley ball court, Shuttle badminton court for the students. Every year sports competition are conducted for encouraging the students in such activities
