History

INSTITUTE OF ANATOMY, MADRAS MEDICAL COLLEGE

The Institute of Anatomy was housed in the ‘Red Fort’, a historical landmark of MMC. This particular building fondly called the ‘Red Fort’ because of its outer colour, is the original ‘Eastern Block’ built at the time of Robert Clive.

Before the 1920s, the then Department of Anatomy was functioning from a smaller area in the Hospital block and the dissection hall was situated in a building adjacent the railway track (on the south-western side of the Red Fort). When Dr. T. Sundara Reddy took charge as the Professor of Anatomy, he fought with the administration to get the Anatomy Department moved to a spacious, well-lit and well-ventilated area. Thus, the department moved in the early 1920s to the then ‘new;’ Eastern Block.

Initially, the Department of Anatomy functioned from the first floor and the Department of Physiology from the ground floor of this building. In 1952, the building became the exclusive house of Anatomy; dissection hall and museum continued upstairs; the Histology section with the concerned laboratory and preparation rooms came to be accommodated in the ground floor, which arrangement continued till the department got shifted to the new campus of Madras Medical College, in 2013.

The Department has had an impressive list of Professors and faculty members. Dr.T.Sundara Reddy and Dr.D.Siva Subramania Mudaliar were extremely passionate about Anatomy. Dr.U.Venkataraya Nayak was already internationally reputed when premature death snatched him away. Dr.Anantha Narayana Iyer and Dr.M.M.Cooper added colour and glory. During early 1960s, the Department was upgraded as an Institute and Prof.Dr.M.M.Cooper became the first Director. From then on, the fame and name of ‘Red Fort’ has continued to grow far and wide. Successive Directors have contributed enormously to the development of the Institute and a much-respected list of teachers has adorned the Institute. Which student of MMC would forget the names of Dr. M. Muthu, Dr.Saratha Kathiresan, Dr. S. Meenakshi Sundaram, Dr.Gangabai, Dr.Leela Rajendran, Dr.Anantha Raman, Dr.Cecilia Isaac, Dr.T.Pethammal, Dr.T.S.Ranganathan, Dr.N.Subramaniam, Dr. B. Venkatesan, Dr.Christilda Felicia, Dr. Sudha Seshayyan and a host of others.

Anatomy is often described a ‘tough subject’; however, the stint with Anatomy at the Red Fort had always spelt magic for all MMCeans.

The Institute in the recent years has kept up its original lustre and glory. With M.D.Anatomy postgraduate students holding its flag aloft, the Institute has been participating in several State and National Conferences, presenting papers and conducting a continuous array of academic activities.
