History

Established in the Year: 1970

  • 1 The development of Diabetology in Madras as a separate specialty could be traced back to the 1940’s. It took roots in Madras Medical College in the year 1946 when Late Lt.Col.K.P.G. Menon and Dr.Sam.G.P.Moses started an independent Diabetic Clinic at Government General Hospital, Chennai in the year 1950.
  • It was upgraded as separate Department with 12 beds in 1970.

  • In 1979, the bed strength of the department was increased to 30 (thirty) by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
  • In the year 2010, the Department was upgraded into “Institute of Diabetology” and the post of Professor was upgraded to that of “Director” by the Government of Tamil Nadu with Professor N.Rajendiran as the first director of the Institute of Diabetology.
  • The Pregnancy Diabetes Services of the Institute reflects the special interest of the Institute in the field of Pregnancy Diabetes. These services were first started in the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Hospital for Women and Children, Egmore, Chennai in the year 1979-80. They were further extended to Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women in 1995.
  • Tamil Nadu was the first state in the whole country to start a fulltime 2 years Diploma in Diabetology course, which is being conducted at the Institute of Diabetology at Madras Medical College & Govt.
