The ENT Department of MMC-RGGGH has been functioning for over 95 years. In earlier days, patients suffering
from ENT ailments were seen in a small room under the staircase in the main General Hospital building.
About the year 1925, it was decided to send somebody for specialized training in the Ear, Nose and Throat diseases
and Dr. P.V. Cherian was sent abroad on study leave for specialization in ENT, since he was holding FRCS (GS).
After 1927, Dr. P.V. Cherian took over charge. A special indent was then placed in for all the equipment and within a few months,
these arrived from Mayer and Phelps, England and then the department was adequately equipped for the needs of that time, although the accommodation was limited.
In 1967, a bullet was removed from the nasopharynx of legendary actor M.G.R. by Prof. Dr. T. Ramadass, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Sathyanarayana in the famous
ENT OT-6 (Courtesy the Mail 05/09/1967). In 1969 Prof. Dr. Ramadass took over the newly created Audiology Section
By the grace of the Government of Tamil Nadu vide G.D.Ms No 2491, dated 03/12/1971, the status of the Department was raised to that of Upgraded Institute of Otorhinolaryngology(UIORL),
a full-fledged Post Graduate Institute with Director cum Professor and 5 full-fledged teachers.
In 1974 Prof. Dr. S. Kameswaran took over as Director and in his tenure a separate unit and Institute of Audiology was created. MS seats were increased to 6 and DLO to 24 per year from 1980.
Many complicated Head and Neck Oncological surgeries were done in our department under the leadership of the Chiefs of the respective units during this period. Prof. Dr. K.K. Ramalingam played an important
role in demonstrating laryngectomies and neck dissections to the students at that time which was video documented and made available as teaching material for all the budding ENT Surgeons.
In the late 80s fibreoptic bronchoscopy was done by Dr. T.G. Manickam and CO2 laser surgeries for larynx was done in our department under Dr. T. Rathinam. Complicated Otological
surgeries were demonstrated and Laryngectomy Club was formed by Prof. Dr. Pacifica Simon.
In early part of 90s, introduction to rigid nasal endoscopy was made and the then young ENT surgeons started using nasal endoscopes for endoscopic sinus surgeries and skull base surgeries,
a change from the conventional sinus surgeries. Endoscopic ear surgery was started as early as 1995.
In the late part of 90s, a number of academic events were held. The pioneer was Dr. N Radhakrishnan who was instrumental in conducting the 1 Live Surgical ENT Workshop in a Government College Hospital.
This was followed by a Hands on Cadaver Dissection Workshop during the tenure of Dr. Rathinam which was a boon to the young ENT surgeons.
A Head and Neck Onco Surgical Workshop conducted by Prof. Dr. Pacifica Simon was an eyeopener for the Oncological surgeries done in our department. A live surgical workshop with in house faculty was conducted by Prof. Dr. Ammamuthu.
Prof. A.K. Sukumaran Memorial Annual Gold Medal Exam for ENT post graduates of entire Tamil Nadu is regularly hosted by UIORL.
The cochlear implant program was initiated by the Director Prof. Dr. K. Balakumar in 2010 as a pilot project for 30 children by a special grant by the former Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi, under the mentorship of Padma Shri
Prof. Dr. Mohan Kameswaran MS, DLO, FRCS, FAMS, DSC This paved the way for the percolation of the cochlear implant program to all Government Hospitals in Tamil Nadu under CMCHIS.
The vision of these two stalwarts led us to reach the landmark 400 cochlear implants in 2022. The College of Speech and Hearing which was started in 2010 was another feather in the cap of Prof. Dr. K Balakumar.
The first National Symposium on cochlear implant was conducted during the tenure of the then Director Prof. Dr. A Muraleedharan. With the implementation of the CMCHIS scheme in all the Government Medical College Hospitals from 2012, Our institute started earning more revenues resulting in procurement of the latest equipments
During the tenure of Director Prof. Dr. G.Gananthan, the detailed planning of our Department in
the newly constructed Tower Block 3 was submitted and approved. Advanced skull base surgery equipments were procured. A live skull base surgical workshop by internationally renowned faculty Dr. T.N. Jankiraman and a Neurootology workshop was conducted during his tenure. All this good work was continued during the tenure of Prof. Dr. M.K. Rajasekar, including development of a Level 3 Polysomnography Sleep Lab.
The institute has assisted RGGGH in handling COVID 19 pandemic and Post COVID Mucormycosis epidemic by operating on more than 1200 patients, which is an Indian record.
Institute of Speech and Hearing was constituted in 1978 to cater to patients with speech and hearing disorders. Six sanctioned posts of audiologists and speech therapists and three Audiometrician posts were created in the Department to carry out various clinical activities. Six audiology rooms, speech lab, AVT rooms, swallowing therapy and vestibular rehabilitation are available

Mas Pritam das , 8 year old male child from Hooghly district of westbengal was found to be suffering from Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, a disease which predominantly affects young adolescent male that can cause torrential nasal bleeding and obstruction. The child was first taken to AIIMS Kalyani, Westbengal where he was found to be in stage 4 of JNA as the mass was found to be occupying the orbit causing proptosis of the eyeball and has breached the extradural space.
Due to lack of facilities to operate, his parents then took him to a private hospital in Vellore followed by JIPMER, Pondicherry, where he was again not operated due to lack of timely investigations, proper instruments and ICU setup. Following which they visited Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai
After complete examination done by the team of ENT doctors led by Prof. Dr.N.Suresh kumar M.S, D.L.O in the upgraded institute of otorhinolaryngology, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on 8/8/2023, the patient was admitted as inpatient in ENT ward. All the first-line and basic investigations were done to the patient with zero delay

have done coablation assisted transnasal endoscopic resection of mass with preop embolisation and intraop right external carotid artery ligation, using the sophisticated instruments purchased under Chief minister's comprehensive health insurance scheme. In this procedure the mass was completed removed from the skull base and orbit giving the child a complete disease clearance.
After a good post-op care for around 1 week, the child reverted back to his normal life and was discharged happily. At present the child is completely free from disease and he is found to be in good condition.

Sep. 23- A 70-year-old man was found struggling for his life on a footpath near Chennai Central. Few good Samaritans tended to him, gave him water, changed him into clean clothes and administered first aid.
Availing the help of ‘108’ ambulance service, they admitted him to our hospital.
“The old man speaks in Hindi. He was found unconscious, with maggots in his eyes and ears. We are giving her continuous treatment. He will continue to receive treatment at the rehabilitation centre at RGGGH until someone finds him.” reported the Dean, Prof Dr

Special mention was given to the ENT department and the post graduates who were relentlessly taking care of the elderly man, collecting investigations and delivering it to the labs and waiting for the reports as the patient did not have any by stander. With the efforts of the UIORL, the patient was cleared of maggots, his vision was preserved and his condition drastically improved.
People's Welfare Minister Subramanian and Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi praised the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, doctors, nurses and nurses for rescuing and treating the elderly man.
