INSTITUTE OF NEPHROLOGY
- Nephrology Department as a separate sub-Speciality was started by Prof. M.S. Amaresan in 1972.It was the first government tertiary renal care centre of South India and fourth oldest department in the country.
- D.M.Nephrology Course was started in 1978 with one candidate per year which was increased to two from the academic year 1980-81 and subsequently to six per year from 2010-11. The Department moved to 8 storey exclusive “New Renal Block” in 2020.
- In 1987, Prof.M.A.Muthusethupathi became the head of the department. Under his leadership, regular kidney transplantation programme was started in July 1987.
- In 1996, first Cadaver Kidney transplantation was done. Till date, 147 Nephrologists have been trained from this department.
MILESTONES OF NEPHROLOGY DEPARTMENT
- 1969 – First Hemodialysis performed.
- 1972 – Separate Department of Nephrology established.
- 1987 – Regular Renal Transplantation programme initiated.
- 1996 – First Cadaver Kidney Transplantation performed.
- 2000 – First CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) performed; Prof. M.S.P. Gold Medal instituted.
- 2008 – Regular Deceased Donor Transplant Programme started.
- 2010 – Number of D.M. Nephrology postgraduates increased to six per year.
- 2012 – 1000th Renal Transplantation and 100th Cadaver Transplantation achieved.
- 2013 – New Maintenance Hemodialysis Unit commissioned.
- 2014 – Regular CAPD Programme initiated.
- 2016 – Department upgraded as Institute of Nephrology.
- 2020 – New Renal Block inaugurated.
- 2021 – Maximum number of COVID dialysis performed in the state.
- 2022 – Regular Paediatric Kidney Transplantation Programme launched.
