History

  • The Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Institute of Child Health (ICH) holds a distinguished place in the medical history of India. Established in 1965 by the visionary PROF. Dr. M.S. Ramakrishnan, the department has grown into a national leader in pediatric surgical care and education.
  • A significant milestone came in 1967, when the department became the first superspeciality unit in the country to launch an MCh course in Pediatric Surgery. This pioneering step set the standard for advanced surgical training in the care of children across India.
  • Over the decades, the department has expanded in both size and scope. In 2013, the number of postgraduate seats increased from 3 to 9, reflecting the growing demand for skilled pediatric surgeons. The department celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2015, marking 50 years of excellence in education, research, and patient care.
  • One of the department’s proudest achievements is the establishment of a synchronized exclusive newborn OT complex with a dedicated newborn ward—the first of its kind in the country. This innovation significantly improved surgical outcomes for neonates.
  • Further enhancements came with support from JAICA, which funded laparoscopic instruments for the operating theaters, upgraded the outpatient block, and helped increase medical manpower—all first implemented at ICH.
  • Over the past 60 years, the department has trained nearly 180 pediatric surgeons, many of whom now serve in government institutions throughout Tamil Nadu, delivering specialized care to children in need.
  • The department’s impact also extends beyond the state. It has become a trusted referral center for complex pediatric surgical cases from neighboring states such as Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Today, the Department of Pediatric Surgery at ICH continues to lead with innovation, compassion, and excellence—remaining true to its founding vision while shaping the future of child healthcare in India.
