  • Started in 1819 as” Madras Eye Infirmary “ : the First and oldest eye hospital in Asia , next only to Moorfield’s eye hospital.
  • 1844 – renamed “Government Ophthalmic Hospital “
  • 1911 -Lady Lawley ward was added.This has been declared as a heritage building by UNESCO (in 2007).
  • 1920 – School of Ophthalmology was opened .
FIRST EYE Museum in the world is in the premises called ELLIOTS museum
  • 1948 – First eye bank in India started in this GOH. First corneal transplant done.
  • 1962 – School of Optometry started for degree and diploma courses.
  • 1969 -new Out Patient block started during 150 th anniversary.
  • 1985 – upgraded as “ REGIONAL INSTITUTE of OPHTHALMOLOGY”.
  • 2019- bicentenary year celebrated.

  • Retinal conditions like Diabetic retinopathy, Vein occlusion, vasculitis needing Laser Photocoagulation, Intravitreal AntiVEGF are scheduled appropriately so that there is no delay or further progression of disease.
  • Diabetic retinopathy screening in children with IDDM is done in ICH diabetic clinic.
  • Retinopathy of prematurity screening is done as per ICROP guidelines with detailed IDO evaluation of almost all babies at NICU.
  • Screened babies with ROP are reviewed periodically, mostly on a weekly basis. Babies needing laser photocoagulation are treated at IOG Egmore under pediatrician care.
  • Few babies may require intravitreal AntiVEGF which is given at SNB theatre at ICH under monitored anaesthetic care by us.
  • We encounter a wide range of complications during cataract surgery like Nucleus drop, IOL drop and in certain instances unfortunate occurrence of postoperative endophthalmitis.
  • Several Endophthalmitis patients identified both in RIOGOH and referred from other government and NGO hospitals are treated at the earliest with core vitrectomy, intravitreal antibiotics, and antifungal injections.
  • Ophthalmologists from other district government hospitals are also given training in medical retina and laser techniques.

RIO-GOH is credited with the Rich Heritage of establishing the first ever eye bank in India. Embellished with such a rich history, the cornea clinic has been working tirelessly to render specialized care to patients suffering from corneal diseases. Cornea clinic in association with Lions bank has been striving hard to prevent corneal blindness. The clinic tutors undergraduates and trains postgraduates, assistant surgeons & paramedical staff in the field of cornea.

Services Rendered:
  • Specialized contact lens services are given for keratoconus patients.
  • Keratoconus cases are evaluated with Sirius topography. They are fitted with contact lenses (Scleral Rigid, Rose K1, K2). Progression is halted with corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL).
  • Corneal hydrops is treated with pneumodescemetopexy with/without compression sutures. Advanced cases are treated with Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) or Optical Penetrating Keratoplasty (OPK).
  • Pseudophakic Bullous Keratopathy/Corneal Endothelial Dystrophy are treated with Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) or Optical Penetrating Keratoplasty (OPK).
  • Corneal ulcers are treated with topical medication.
  • Therapeutic Keratoplasty (TKP).
  • Chemical injury patients undergo tuck-in tenon patch graft or amniotic membrane grafting.
  • Peripheral Ulcerative Keratitis cases are evaluated thoroughly and managed medically. When surgical treatment is required, they are managed with Amniotic Membrane Graft (AMG) or Tenon’s Patch Graft.
  • Small perforations are treated with tuck-in Tenon’s Patch Graft. Corneal neovascularization is treated with intrastromal anti-VEGF (Bevacizumab).
  • Round-the-clock services are available for donor eye collection after receiving telephone messages from the family of the deceased.

Under the canopy of ophthalmic specialty, our unit suffused into subsequent specialities which encompasses strabismic and paediatric ophthalmology patients.

Paediatric Ophthalmology:

Offers astute care from newborn to teens and aids them in visualizing and perceiving the environment in a better way. There are repository of charts and techniques to detect visual impairment in a child with a separate team of optometrist along with orthoptic services.

BASE EYE CAMP UNIT OF RIO-GOH has been serving the rural population through its outreach camps and screening programs.

Eye camps are conducted thrice a week in urban PHCs in Chennai and patients are screened for cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Apart from public camps, patients in need of investigations and speciality treatment are admitted in the base eye camp ward and treated. Camp surgeries are being conducted six days in a week.

Undergraduates and postgraduates are posted for community ophthalmology training Screening activities in urban PHCs are conducted regularly in spite of the COVID Pandemic.
