The bone marrow transplantation unit at RGGGH was established in January 2018 and is funded by the Tamil Nadu Health Systems project.
The unit consists of five HEPA-filtered single rooms with the capacity to perform 5 transplants per month.
Additionally, 5 single rooms are Dedicated to pre and post-BMT patient care.
This unit offers comprehensive care for various cancers (leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma) and progressive non-cancerous blood disorders like aplastic anaemia, thalassemia, metabolic disorders and primary immunodeficiency syndromes.
Over the past five years, the BMT unit has provided care to 101 patients, including 48 pediatric cases and 53 adults.
Notably, the department has achieved impressive success rates with 78/99 patients currently alive, highlighting the effectiveness of the treatment.
It has also reduced the financial burden of families through comprehensive health insurance schemes.
The pediatric BMT program was initiated in May 2022 and within the last 18 months, children as young as 5 months have undergone BMT.
