The FRCS exam was proudly conducted for the first time in Madras Medical College, Chennai in the year of 1998.

The Institute of General Surgery conducts various medal exams for its undergraduate and postgraduate students over the course of the year. Academically and clinically gifted individuals are selected and bestowed with medals of merit for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The Institute of General Surgery also takes immense efforts in educating their postgraduates and undergraduates through regularly conducted UG and PG case discussions, Journal Clubs, rare case presentations, symposiums, clinical society meetings, and guest lectures by distinguished professors every other month.

GENESIS is Madras Medical College's prestigious annual undergraduate academic event held in the month of September every year. The Institute of General Surgery understands the importance of imparting basic surgical knowledge to all MBBS undergraduates and plays an active role in GENESIS.
Various workshops are held on suturing techniques, basic laparoscopic instruments, and live demonstrations of simple surgeries.
Every year, the Institute of General Surgery (IGS) conducts an annual surgical conference for postgraduates titled "SURGICON", inviting participants from across the country for case discussions, poster sessions, and symposium presentations.
Distinguished professors are invited as panelists to preside over the various events.

Government General Hospital, Madras was founded in the year 1664 by the British to cater medical needs for the soldiers of East India Company.
Later in the year 1835, medical school was established.
Madras Medical College was established in the year 1850.
In 1855, it received recognition from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, London and later from the Royal Colleges of Scotland and Ireland.
It was affiliated to University of Madras in 1857.
It was affiliated to Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University in 1988.
Department of General Surgery which was housed in Bradfield Surgical Block was opened by Sir George Stanley – the Governor of Madras on 26th March 1934.
The department has unique pride of producing highly skilled surgeons who have been acclaimed worldover and it continues to do so.
Studied and graduated in medicine during 1909.
On reversion to civil side was posted as professor of surgery at Madras Medical College.
He was the founder president of Association of Surgeons of India.
Col. Pandalai was credited with carrying out the first successful partial gastrectomy in Madras as early as 1926 in Government General Hospital, Madras. A road in Old Washermanpet has been named as Pandalai Road.

Dr. Natesan Rangabashyam (1936‑2013)
Dr. Natesan Rangabashyam was an Indian surgical gastroenterologist. He was known for his pioneering efforts in the fields of surgical gastroenterology and proctology in India.
He established the department of surgical gastroenterology at Madras Medical College and introduced the first MCh course in surgical gastroenterology in India.
He received the prestigious B.C. Roy award twice, the highest Indian award in the medical category.
The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 2002, for his contributions to medical science.
He was honoured with the Living Legend award.
Dr. Sivapatham Vittal is an Indian surgical endocrinologist, considered as the father of surgical endocrinology in India.
He established the department of endocrinology at Madras Medical College in 1987, known to be the first such department in India.
Dr. Vittal is the founder president of the Indian Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
He served as a surgical tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The Government of India honored Dr. Vittal in 2011, with the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri.
