Madras Medical College, being one of the oldest medical colleges, has a rich history and heritage. Several legendaries and luminaries have studied and served in this institution. The current administration under the Dean is quite determined not just to sustain, but to enhance the glory of this institution.

Education is not just imparting knowledge, but facilitating young graduates blossoming into wholesome professionals. Keeping this in consideration, several initiatives have been planned. Guidelines issued by the National Medical Council are diligently implemented. In addition, certain unique programmes are envisaged.

Academics

  • Twice monthly Clinical Society Meeting is conducted with participation of faculty and students of all the departments. This meeting provides opportunity to come across developments in other departments
  • Endowment lectures / orations are conducted annually by most of the departments. Students get ample opportunities to listen to and interact with the award winning national & international experts.
  • Prize examinations are conducted in almost all the departments. Madras Medical College is the institution offering maximum number of prize examinations in the entire state.
  • Students are encouraged and motivated to participate in regional & national level competitive academic events. They are guided to organise state level annual academic conclave also (GENESIS)
  • Frequent interaction with faculty of clinical departments for enhancing knowledge on clinical application
  • Organising exhibition of 3D models of anatomic structures
  • Organising cadaver lab for enhancing surgical skills

Patient Care

  • Comprehensive state-of-the-art care for the underprivileged patients is the goal.
  • Emergency care and Critical care have been strengthened.
  • In addition to the previously existing Intensive Medical Care Unit, Toxicology Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit & Post-operative Intensive Care Unit, 22 ICUs have been established in different departments, including a new exclusive Critical Care Unit.
  • Special clinics — Transgender clinic, Metabolic disease screening clinic (under Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam programme), Lupus Nephritis clinic, Epilepsy clinic, etc., have recently been initiated.
  • Hospital-acquired infection control measures have been strengthened. Recent initiative — use of a particular colour bed linen every day to ensure change of linen daily.
  • Patient and attendants’ amenities have been improved – modernised kitchen to provide food for patients, provision of dining facilities on every floor, mobile charging points, etc.
  • More focus on Deceased Donor Organ Transplantation programme. MMC is the centre which has done maximum deceased organ donations in the entire state.

Research

  • Promotion of undergraduates to carry out research through ICMR grants.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit — an ICMR unit is functioning well. Several research proposals have received ICMR grants.
  • Periodic workshops are conducted on Research methodology, Good Clinical Practice, Biostatistics & Scientific manuscript writing.

Future Goals

  • Further collaboration with the best universities/institutions across the globe in academics and research.
  • Expansion of research activities – focusing on inter-departmental and integrated research.
  • Promotion of epidemiological research.
  • Encouraging out-reach activities with community participation.
  • Implementation of ‘eco-friendly’ measures in the hospital campus – solar power utilisation, minimisation of power use, innovative bio-medical disposal systems, and making the campus greener with plantation of more trees.
  • Focusing on the potential role of Artificial Intelligence.
  • Establishment of state-of-the-art Genetics and Molecular Biology laboratories.
  • Ethics and Communication skill development programmes for students.
