Pioneering Excellence in Cancer Care Since 1977

History & Growth

  • Established in 1977 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. K. Ramachandra, the chemotherapy unit began with 20 beds.
  • In 1978, Prof. Dr. S. Subramaniam took over, restructuring it into the Department of Medical Oncology.
  • Currently headed by Dr.J Kannan, a prominent figure in the field of medical oncology, today, the department has expanded to more than 80 beds, serving as Tamil Nadu’s premier referral center for advanced cancer care.

 

Clinical Services

  • Annual new cases: 2,200
  • Outpatient volume: 100–130 cases daily
  • Daycare chemotherapy: 40–50 patients daily, enabling same-day treatment without hospitalization.
  • Specialized procedures:
    • Image-guided pigtail insertion
    • Bone marrow aspiration & biopsy
    • Diagnostic/therapeutic lumbar puncture
    • Ascitic fluid tapping & pleurodesis

 

Comprehensive Treatment

  • Management of all malignancies across all age groups.
  • Advanced therapies: Chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapies (monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors) under the guidance of Prof. Dr. J. Kannan.

 

Academic Excellence

  • DM Medical Oncology course launched in 1996 (initially 2 seats, increased to 4 seats in 2010).

I am a Senior Medical Oncologist with 20years of experience in the field of Medical Oncology. I am currently the head of the Department of Medical Oncology at, RGGGH & MMC, Chennai, for the past 2 years. I have authored several scientific publications and conducted clinical trials as principal investigator. I have a keen interest in teaching and have been mentoring students for the past few years. I am member of Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Curriculum Committee for Super speciality courses. I have served as examiner for D.M Medical Oncology Post Graduates across the country for various universities and institutes of national importance

  • Every year average of 2800 newly diagnosed cancer patients registered and 18000 patients are treated.It includes all solid and hematalogical malignancy

  • Cancer awareness programs and cancer survivor meet regularly conducted in our department.2023 worl cancer day theme “close the care gap”which is about understanding inequalities in cancer care.On world cancer day (February 4),careness awareness rally and program conduted in Rajiv Gandhi government hospital campus by oncology department.
  • people who have battled different cancer and treated in our department are disease free and living happy,healthy lives can help fill so many hearts with inspiration. Our best measure of success is health of our patients.22 years old male with Hodgkins lymphoma stage IV presented in our department with poor performance status,bed ridden and critically ill,with our continuous effort and treatment protocol we improved patient performance status and saved his life
